The IDS (Indian Day Schools) Claims Assistance Program:
In January 2020, following the approval of a national settlement between Canada and former students of Indian Day Schools (represented by Gowling WLG), a claims process was initiated to compensate individuals who suffered harm as a result of their experiences in these schools. Individuals have until July 2022 to complete and submit their claim forms to the Claims Administrator (Deloitte).
Argyle’s mandate in implementing The IDS Community Claims Assistance Program is to support as many individuals as possible in starting, making progress, and completing their forms through in-person assistance sessions support both on and off reserve. The assistance sessions will enable claimants to better understand the claim form and process, complete components of the form – including the drafting of their narratives – with assistant support, and access onsite legal counsel (provided by Gowling). Program objectives include:
- Providing direct, in-person Claims Assistance support to as many IDS Claimants as possible, in the most efficient manner, across Canada;
- Creating a culturally-safe and trauma informed environment and process, based on the needs of communities, that best enables Claimants to receive support;
- Enabling Claimants to initiate, make progress on, and/or complete their forms and leave sessions with all the information they need to move their claims forward.
ABOUT THE ROLE: Reporting to the National Director, the Regional Community Relations and Facilitator of the IDS Claims Assistance Program will work collaboratively with the central regional team to execute the regional program* to deliver claims assistance services to Indian Day School claimants – within the timeframe and budget of the national program plan. In delivering the regional program, the Regional Community Relations and Session Facilitator will work closely and collaboratively with the National Community Relations and Urban Strategy Lead, Regional Lead and Regional team to ensure claim support session promotion and delivery meet the needs of local communities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining respectfully and meaningful relationship with Indigenous communities and organizations;
- Significant experience and knowledge of Indigenous communities, organizations and peoples;
- Experience working within a large, national, diverse, and distributed team in the context of an emotionally and physically challenging project context;
- Demonstrated experience and success contributing to complex and multifaceted projects, in a dynamic environment, with the proven ability to pivot, problem-solve, and meet milestones and objectives within budget and time constraints;
- Significant depth and breadth of experience working with diverse Indigenous communities (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit);
- Experience engaging and facilitating sessions with diverse populations;
- Extensive knowledge of the socio-economic challenges and barriers impacting Indigenous peoples.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Strong team leader with excellent organizational and communication skills;
- Strong understanding of Indigenous context and experience working with Indigenous communities;
- Highly organized and pragmatic with strong problem-solving skills;
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills;
- Ability to provide direction and support team members in meeting their deliverables;
- Analytical ability to assess strengths and gaps to inform ongoing improvement.
- Knowledge of French or Indigenous language an asset.
- Based on overall national community plan, conducts outreach to validate and secure regional session commitments and dates, with support from National Community Relations and Urban Strategy Lead;
- Develops and implements regional project plan per national plan;
- Travels to communities early to meet with community members with the purpose of engagement to tailor the the communications strategy and session delivery to the community;
- Represents regional team at national team meetings;
- Lead community engagement sessions when in community, responsible for communicating program information to community members and overseeing local program implementation;
- With National Logistics and Training Lead, develops and delivers training for other team members on session facilitation;
- Provides strategic counsel to the national and regional project teams as required (e.g., trouble shooting, risk management, etc.)
- Ongoing evaluation and improvement: Following each community session, conducts a formal debrief with members of the implementation team and communications team to understand and document what is working and where improvement or additional support is required;
- Works with National Director and regional team to develop and implement improvements to the process based on ongoing evaluation and learnings in a nationally consistent, but regionally-relevant manner;
- Ensures project staff are aware of and can access available mental health resources, when needed.
